The Winds of Change

Most of us are creatures of habit. We plan, make to-do lists and rely on routines to get us where we want to go. However, no matter how much planning we do, we all face surprises both happy and hindering.

When the winds of change with our health roll in, and our routines and expectations are uprooted, we are forced to adapt to stress, shock and surprise.

Rather than worry over and fear about the unknowns, we can try to prepare for and practice thinking of change as an opportunity for tremendous personal growth. A major mind-shift from needing to feel in control all the time to practicing staying present and curious about what’s ahead.

When we ebb-and-flow with uncertainty, it tests our capacity for resilience. Although this can feel overwhelming and fearful, we can stay focused on problem-solving using Plan B’s. The Plan B’s are also the Plan “How-To-Be”. How do I want to respond in this unfamiliar situation?”

As the Chinese proverb says, “When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, others build windmills.”

Some practice suggestions for leaning into a “To-Be” situation:

  1. Try to not over-think things that have not happened. So much time is lost worrying about things that never happen.

  2. Take a deep breathe in, then on the exhale, say “I will try my best”. That is enough.

  3. Make a list of what brings you joy. Do at least one of these.

  4. Make a vision board to help you stay focused. Pictures and words are a helpful reminder to stay grounded.

  5. Reach out to someone important in your life. Send an old-school, hand-written letter. Make time to have a phone call or Zoom catch-up.

  6. Get the stress out by moving. Stretch, take a short walk or bike ride or just get outside for some fresh air or sunlight.

  7. If your situation involves your health, check in about your attitudes about aging. Think about the wisdom you’ve gained as you age. We can be better versions of ourselves as we age even with health challenges.

  8. Seek out something to make you laugh. Read the comics. Watch funny movies. Look up jokes. Laughter relieves stress. (That is no joke.)

  9. Focus on creative projects during the stormy detours in life. Creativity can flood our brains with dopamine and make us feel better and motivated.

  10. Build a windmill in your mind. Windmills symbolize perseverance. Believe you can adapt to and withstand the winds of change.
